Discipline Priest

What is going to change for discipline priests in Legion?

In the upcoming expansion Legion priests will be playing more offensively and will be healing in a new style. They will be healing with Atonement only.

atone

The Atonement-mechanics will be changing. Every target that you are applying Power Word: Shield or heal with Shadow Mend or Plea will be a affected with Atonement for 15 seconds in Legion. Whenever you cause damage these targets will be healed for 50 percent of damage you do. According to the developers healing is not divided amongst the players, everyone gets the full 50%, no matter how many targets are buffed with Atonement. Your style of play is thus to occupy as many injured targets as you can with Atonement and then to cause damage, to heal these players.

plea

Power Word: Shield will get a cooldown of 6 seconds. But there will be a new instant spell without cooldown which heals for a small amount: Plea. It will probably not be used except in movement, only to quickly place Atonement on a target.

Shadow Mend heals a target in 1.5 seconds to a huge amount, but it’s a dot. Once the target has suffered 50% of the damage of the overall Shadow mend the dot will end. Power Word: Radiance will be your group heal and costs 7% of you mana with a cast time of 2.5 seconds. It provides a moderate amount of heal at the 5 closest allies and puts 50 percent of the normal duration of Atonement on them. They will be healed everytime the disc priest is dealing damage.

Your offensive spell as a discipline priest will continue to be Smite. Penance will not be a healing spell by default. The Pentinent is the level 15-talent of choice if you want to heal with Penance. You have access to Mind Blast and Shadow Word: Pain. The new passive effect Revelation grants your Smite and Mind Blast to have a chance of 30% to reset the cooldown of Penance. Penance will be the most powerful offensive attack of discipline priests in Legion. You want to cast Penance as often as possible as it does enormous damage and theirfore causes a lot of heal. A new level 100 talent, Grace, will be added as a passive effect which increases your healing and absorption on targets that are not affected by Atonement, by 30%.

mastery

Mastery will be important in Legion as it increases the effectiveness of your spells, absorption and healing done. The increased healing value, however, is reduced by half. So with a 60% bonus on absorptions your healing is increased, for example, by 30%. The new mastery of the discipline priest in Legion is called Absolution. It increases your Atonement healing by a default of 28 %. The higher your mastery, the more you heal with Atonement.

Spell and passive changes

  • Atonement: Plea, Power Word: Shield, and Shadow Mend also apply Atonement to your target for 15 sec. When you deal spell damage, you instantly heal all targets affected by Atonement for 50% of the damage done.
  • Penance: 2.5% of base mana, up from 1.2% Launches a volley of holy light at the target, causing 3 Holy damage over 2 sec. Channelable while moving.
  • Power Word: Barrier: Level 65, changed from 70.
  • Rapture: Level 54, changed from 10. For the next 8 sec, your Power Word: Shield has no cooldown.

  • Resurrection: Holy and Discipline only. Brings all dead party members back to life with 35% health and mana. Cannot be cast when in combat.
  • Leap of Faith: Now Discipline and Holy.

  • Grace: Now Talent, instead of ability. Increases your non-Atonement healing and absorption by 30% on targets with Atonement.
  • Shadow Covenant: Draw on the power of shadow to heal up to 5 injured allies within 30 yds of the target for (450% of Spell power), but leaving a shell on them that absorbs the next (225% of Spell Power) healing they receive within 10 secs.

Conclusion

The new way of playing a discipline priest is to apply Atonement on targets that will suffer damage or have already suffered. You must always keep an eye on Atonement durations and refresh it on players. It might become difficult when lots of damage is coming in. Talent Grace seem to be the right thing to increase your healing on targets where Atonement isn’t cast on in these situations. How everything will turn out, how the different talents and their effects and effects of your legendary weapon will be, we will see in Legion – but it will certainly change the gaming experience.

Holy Priest

What is going to change for holy priests in Legion?

chasIn Legion Chakras will get out of the game for Holy Priest. For damage you may make use of Smite, Holy Fire and Holy Word: Chastise. Serenity is a 1 -minute cooldown to heal a huge amount. Holy Word: Sanctify is also on a 1 -minute cooldown, which heals up to six allies. The cooldown of these two new skills can be reduced with the new mechanics.

It will be working like that: Whenever you flashheal or heal, the cooldown of Serenity will be reduced by six seconds. The cooldown of Holy Word:Sanctify will be reduced when Prayer of Healing or Prayer of Mending is used.

apotheThe same mechanism works for Holy Word: Chastise when you use Smite or Holy Fire. Another talent is Apotheosis which increases Serendipity for 30 seconds by 200%. Apart from that not much changes for Holy priests will happen in Legion. Discipline or Holy ?

One can hardly estimate who will do better in the upcoming expansion. Clear is that healers will cause more damage. Whenever more damage is needed – for example in small groups as in Challenge Modes – the discipline priest might come in handy.

With Legion Chakras will belong to the past. We can only hope that in the end holy priests remain competitive and do not have to switch to discipline.

Personally, as an disc heal on my alt and holy priest player a few years ago I cannot wait to play my disc and see how I get along with the new spells. I suggest tracking and watching Atonement on your group closely. I’m pretty sure the standard UI will be tracking it. If you’re using addons I suggest Grid. I’ve been using it for a long time and you can track important buffs and debuffs to your liking.
